Dr Andrew Cleland leaves IPENZ
After 14 years as IPENZ’s chief executive, Dr Andrew Cleland leaves today to become the Chief Executive of the Royal
Society of New Zealand.
Replacing him as interim chief executive is Kieran Devine, a highly-skilled leader with 30 years' experience in the
electricity industry.
IPENZ President Dr Kevin Thompson says Andrew brought energy, intellectual capacity and drive to the role during his
tenure.
“In Andrew’s time, we’ve seen a number of key milestones – the CPEng Act and the associated education and competence
standards,” he says.
“He’s been at the forefront of issues following the Canterbury earthquakes and our response, along with the related
disciplinary issues, arguments and debates around registration and licensing.
“He’s also lifted the Membership from 7,000 to 15,000. That’s no mean feat and the annual growth rate continues to
increase. We’re currently exceeding the average growth rate beyond what it’s been historically. That’s because Andrew
has been passionate about engaging with students at university, a group which then go on to become Graduate Members and
in many cases competency assessed Members of IPENZ. That’s been a key strategy.
“Again, we thank Andrew for all he’s done over these 14 years.”
