Dwelling consents trend continues to rise – Media release

The trend for the number of new dwellings consented is at its highest level since August 2007, Statistics New Zealand
said today.
“The trend for new dwellings has more than doubled since March 2011, but is still 26 percent below the series peak in
January 2004,” business indicators manager Neil Kelly said.
In July 2014, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented rose 0.1 percent (but fell 2.0 percent when
apartments are excluded).
In unadjusted terms, 2,282 new dwellings were consented in July (including 373 apartments). This was the highest number
of new dwellings consented in a month since April 2008.
The regions that consented the most new dwellings were:
• Auckland – 849 (including 325 apartments)
• Canterbury – 609 (including 12 apartments).
Almost $1.4 billion of building work was consented in July, with $876 million of residential work and $512 million of
non-residential work.
Data for building consents is obtained from all territorial authorities.
