NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK 2014 TUESDAY 26TH AUGUST

DAILY RECAP

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

NOM*d

New Zealand Fashion Week is well and truly underway, and what better way to kick off the event than with the return of the iconic NZ brand, NOM*d. Returning to NZFW after four years, the show opened with seven drummers playing full volume throughout the show, emphasising the brand reiterating its voice. The collection, appropriately called ‘Noise’, showcased a variety of knitwear, kilts, sleeveless vests, pinafore dresses, and silk fabrics. NOM*d kicked NZFW 2014 off with a bang, letting us all know loud and clear, that black truly is the new black.

SHEN

Designer Mary-Ellen kicked off her NZFW SHEN debut with strong oriental influences and a calming natural colour palette. Her international experience and passion for both Hong Kong and Japan were visible in the 2014 showcase. The collection had an emphasis on texture, the use of chiffons, gold foils and heavy knitted lace.

New Generation – Young talent – Amber Whitecliffe/Wendy Jerard and Desiree

Amber Whitecliffe:

New Generation kicked off in an upbeat fashion with the introduction of first time fashion week designer, Amber Whitecliffe. Showcasing her ‘Mrs Pinto-Summer 2014/15’ collection, a line inspired by floral patterns and the colour red. The collection is a result of Portugese inspiration, emphasizing elements of the designers newlywed life. Think eye-catching designs, floral prints and bold colours, all with a feminine twist.

Despite 2014 being her designs first debut on the runway, Amber Whitecliffe is a regular at NZFW. Whitecliffe spent many years at NZFW as volunteer, before launching her own label in 2012 later opening her own Parnell Boutique in March 2014.

Frances Jerard

2014 welcomed Wendy Jerard and her collection ‘Out of the Shadows’ from her line ‘Frances Jerard’. The designer well and truly made an entrance, where preparation for the fiesta involved jumping off the skytower in one of her signature gowns. Frances Jerard shares a philosophy of ‘dress life to the full, first impressions counts, there is no second chances’, which was well and truly emphasized in the designers debut at NZFW. The collection boasted bold prints, frills, and bright colours, with all things inbetween, inspiring women to have no limits when it comes to fashion.

Désirée

Wellington designer Désirée Turner debuted her 6th collection on her first time at NZFW, a collection filled with a classic winter colour palette, and long hemlines. Désirée provides women with unique prints and wearability, perfect for being able to dress your outfit up or down, no matter what the occasion.

Lela Jacobs

Lela Jacobs collection reflected her usual minimalist approach, following the grunge trend set earlier by NOM*d. The collection showcased a variety of knits, dresses and vests in a mix of charcoal and cream palettes. Lela Jacobs maintained an androgynous style, with oversized clothing and long hemlines consistent throughout both male and female collections.

Salasai

Salasai kicked off the evening shows, impressing the audience with simple, elegant and aesthetically pleasing pieces. The collection boasted only womenswear for the first time, setting an empowering atmosphere which was further celebrated by a Beyonce soundtrack throughout the show.

Mercades-Benz Presents – Trelise Cooper

Trelise’s highly anticipated showcase certainly didn’t disapoint. The industry heavyweight delivering a range of styles, from american indian inspired, to bold prints and bohemian designs – the show had it all. Flowers, tassels and sky high boots made several appearances throughout the show, guaranteed trends set straight from the catwalk.

Stolen Girlfriends Club

The only off-site show of the day saw Stolen Girlfreinds Club take fashion to Western Springs Speedway. Their show, GuiltyOnes, mixed burning rubber with their unmistakable street fashion.

Dame Pieter Stewart: “After a wonderful evening last night to kick off the week, today has felt qwuite relaxed, with a lot of highlights on the runway. We’re excited to be supporting six New Genferation designers this year and from their show right through to Trelise, the quality of the fashion has already been impressive.”
