Akarua Purchases Vineyards on Felton Road
Akarua is delighted to announce a major vineyard purchase with the acquisition of vineyards located in Felton Road and Lowburn finalised on Friday 22 August 2014.
Akarua, established in 1996 by Sir Clifford Skeggs is the largest family owned vineyard in Central Otago with single estate holdings in Cairnmuir Road Bannockburn, this recent purchase will significantly boost their total vineyard area to 100 hectares in Central Otago.
David Skeggs, Managing Director of the Skeggs Group said that that the company had been actively looking at purchasing developed vineyard in Central Otago for the last 2 years.
“We are very pleased to be able to secure these two notable sites in Central Otago, it will provide us with the ability to develop the Akarua brand and to meet the growing demand for our wines from our customers”.
Bannockburn is widely regarded as the “grand cru” site in Central Otago and the addition of a 26 hectare vineyard at the end of Felton Road will significantly enhance Akarua’s vineyards in this sub-region, reinforcing the families’ belief that it is the premier wine producing sub-region in Central Otago. A second quality parcel of 15 hectares has also been purchased in Lowburn.
Akarua winemaker Matt Connell said that he was hugely excited by the opportunity that the purchase of these vineyards provides.
“These additional vineyards will provide us with quality estate grown fruit that we require for the continued successful growth of the Akarua brand. We are particularly looking forward to exploring the subtleties and nuances of sub regional blends and development of further single vineyard wines”.
The Akarua brand will now be ideally placed to meet the growing domestic and international demand for their wines - particularly with their pinot noir and sparkling wine varietals.
Akarua has a firmly established reputation for producing outstanding wines which continue to gather significant accolades year after year.
