Caltex Customers Can Save More than Money
Starship Foundation set to receive $100,000 for operating rooms upgrade
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 25 AUGUST 2014 – Kiwis across the country who visit Caltex can help save lives in the process, as Caltex today announces its
market-first ‘Swipe for Starship’ initiative, which aims to raise $100,000 for the Starship Foundation over one week.
From today (Monday) until Sunday 31 August, Caltex will donate $1 to the Starship Foundation every time a customer
redeems their AA Smartfuel discounts at Caltex, with proceeds raised going towards the upgrade of the operating rooms at
Starship Children’s Hospital.
One of the stars of the Swipe for Starship campaign is nine-year old Max Woodhams, who was operated on at Starship for a
brain tumour in 2010.
“I can remember all the doctors and nurses at Starship – they were really nice. The new operating rooms will be great
for kids like me,” says Max.
Starship’s operating rooms were originally constructed when the national children’s hospital was built 22 years ago and
standards for surgical environments have moved on since then. Key features of the redevelopment include expanded and
improved pre-operative, parent waiting, reception and play areas; an expanded and improved post anaesthetic care unit,
an additional and fully equipped new 60m² operating room, four refurbished operating rooms and installation of an
innovative LED lighting, image and core surgical system.
Dean Gilbert, Chevron NZ General Manager, says, “Caltex is excited to be launching the Swipe for Starship campaign and
raising funds for a vital facility that helps children from all over New Zealand.
“What the team at Starship achieves on a day-to-day basis is truly inspiring and we are proud to support the amazing
work they do to save and enhance the lives of thousands of Kiwi kids every year. The initiative is part of our ongoing
partnership with the Starship Foundation, and we’re looking forward to seeing the operating rooms open next year,” says
Gilbert.
Brad Clark, Starship Foundation Chief Executive, says, “Today Starship’s operating rooms treat approximately 9,000
children each year – that equates to roughly one surgery every hour. With patients coming from all across the country
and the complexity of cases increasing, we find our six existing operating rooms are frequently at capacity.”
“The money raised from the Swipe for Starship campaign will go a long way to ensuring we continue to provide the
world-class care our patients need. Our thanks to Caltex for supporting Starship kids, and thank you to all AA Smartfuel
customers who visit Caltex and back the campaign,” adds Clark.
