Richard Emerson Named Honorary Fellow of the Guild
Last night, at the 2014 Brewers’ Guild of New Zealand Beer Awards in Wellington, Richard Emerson was named an Honorary
Fellow of the Guild. This is incredible recognition for Richard, who has made a significant contribution to the New
Zealand brewing industry.
From the opening of the first Emerson’s Brewery in 1992, Richard Emerson has always been an innovator, a dreamer and
never afraid to experiment. Richard’s love of all beer styles, brewing techniques and international flavours have helped
him ferment some of New Zealand’s most iconic beers.
Often referred to as “the Godfather of New Zealand craft beer” he has inspired a whole new generation of New Zealand
brewers and is one of the true success stories of the New Zealand brewing industry.
Richard says: “It seems like yesterday that I was making a mess in mum’s kitchen with my first brew kit, this is a huge
honour and I am really humbled by it.”
Along with Richard’s prestigious recognition, Emerson’s Brewery also picked up an array of awards last night and came
remarkably close to winning the award for New Zealand’s Champion Brewery. Emerson’s also received top honours in the
European Lager Style category for Gladiator Bock and in the European Ale Style category for JP 2014 – with both beers
winning gold awards and collecting the overall trophy in their respective categories.
