100 jobs lost at Croxley as high Kiwi dollar keeps hurting
One hundred jobs will be lost at Croxley Stationery in Auckland, which is being forced to close by the high dollar and ongoing crisis in New Zealand manufacturing.
"Our members are gutted by this announcement," says Joe Gallagher, EPMU national industry organiser. "They haven't done anything wrong, and the company feels they're making the only decision they can in the economic circumstances.
"Despite good times for the primary sector, Kiwi manufacturers who create skilled, well-paid jobs are finding it hard to remain competitive on the export market, so they're moving the jobs overseas.
"We need a government which will take manufacturing seriously and help companies to keep their work in New Zealand.
"Over a year ago, Labour, the Greens, New Zealand First and MANA supported a Manufacturing Inquiry which produced a practical, realistic strategy to support the industry and protect jobs. But the government didn't want to know.
"Now 100 more workers are paying the price for National's inaction."
A final decision on the closure is scheduled for 4 September. EPMU members at Croxley are entitled to redundancy as part of their collective agreement.
