Airport lab to benefit all
ESR Chief Executive Dr Keith McLea has acknowledged the successful partnership behind today’s opening of a new forward screening laboratory at Auckland Airport.
“This is a perfect example of how ESR science is behind the great work of those who protect our borders.
“ESR and Customs work closely on a number of initiatives and I’m sure the outstanding cooperation shown between the two agencies on this project will only strengthen our relationship.
“ESR can now capture front line intelligence from this facility so it will help us understand and strengthen our response to new threats, as well as giving us an ideal opportunity to test new equipment, methodologies and operating models,” Dr McLea said.
Customs Comptroller Carolyn Tremain says Customs recognises that science plays an important role in enabling effective border control, and is committed to using science and technology to strengthen its efforts to disrupt the illicit drug supply chain.
“It’s great to have ESR with us at the frontline.
“The new screening lab brings significant efficiencies to Customs’ work, and I am confident that having this lab located at the border will benefit both agencies and New Zealand,” Ms Tremain says.
ESR staff will operate the laboratory based at the Airport facility, giving Customs faster access to a preliminary analysis of any material or substance of interest.
