Beca wins six INNOVATE NZ awards

Beca is delighted to take home four Excellence and two Merit Awards at the ACENZ (Association of Consulting Engineers)
2014 INNOVATE NZ: Awards of Excellence ceremony. Held in Rotorua on 9 August, these premier engineering awards recognise
projects that have an innovative or extraordinary aspect and encourage a high standard of achievement within the
engineering industry.
There are three levels of awards. The premier Gold Award acknowledges a superior project or innovative achievement, the
Silver Award recognises projects that demonstrate outstanding achievement and service to the client, and the Award of
Merit is given to projects or achievements that demonstrate a standard above what is normally expected.
Beca is proud of our award-winning projects, many of which have already been recognised with multiple accolades.
Christchurch International Airport – Gold Award of Excellence: The Integrated Terminal Project is based around the provision of a new terminal with integrated check-in for
international and domestic passengers. The jewel of the long list of innovative features is the artesian heating and
cooling system which has resulted in energy efficiencies, reduced carbon emissions and lower operating costs.
Wairakei Bioreactor – Gold Award of Excellence: The Bioreactor is a biological treatment facility constructed at Contact Energy’s existing Wairakei Geothermal Power
Station. It uses millions of naturally occurring sulphur oxidising bacteria, found in the Waikato River, to remove
hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from the Wairakei station’s cooling water.
Sir Paul Reeves Building – Silver Award of Excellence: Auckland University of Technology’s Sir Paul Reeves Building houses the School of Communication, and now forms the heart
the city campus. The flexible, open nature of the building required the development of innovative solutions to realise
the architectural and client vision for the building.
Tahuna Wastewater Treatment Plant Stage 2 Upgrade – Silver Award of Excellence: CH2M Beca was engaged by Dunedin City Council to undertake the design and construction monitoring of the Tahuna
Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade, which serves a population of 120,000. The upgrade achieved all of the client’s
requirements, minimising odour generation with innovative enhancements to extend the life and performance of the
existing primary sedimentation tanks.
Christchurch Southern Motorway – Award of Merit: The NZ Transport Agency, together with Beca, Opus and Fulton Hogan embarked on a journey to provide Christchurch with a
route that delivers reduced travelling times, improved access and safer streets. Our dedicated team approach proved
critical; the Design Build contract spanned both Christchurch earthquakes, creating many challenges and prompting
innovative thinking.
Haywards Synchronous Condenser – Award of Merit: Transpower New Zealand Limited currently operates nine synchronous condenser units on their transmission system which
provide dynamic reactive power support for the National Grid. Beca carried out the detailed design for the transformers
to connect them to the 110 kV network. This was a highly complex due to the age and specialist nature of the equipment
involved, and the unusual site arrangements that needed to be accommodated in the design.
