RAIL SAFETY WEEK
This week is Rail Safety Week (11th – 17th August). It’s an initiative to raise awareness about rail safety and encourage safe behaviour around trains and tracks.
Auckland’s new electric trains is supplied by two connections to Transpower's 220 kV national grid, one at Southdown Power Station and the other at Transpower's Penrose substation. Both connections are duplicated and one connection can supply the entire network if the other one fails, creating a high level of redundancy.
The level crossing bells and barriers are supplied from a secure signalling supply from Vector, with back up UPS systems (batteries and generators).
NETWORK SUMMARY for week ending 10 August 2014
ELECTRICITY
Power was isolated for safety to four house/building fires during the week, in Otahuhu, Henderson, Te Arai and Mangere.
Lines downs were reported in Takapuna, Mt Roskill and in Papakura.
Two car v pole incidents occurred in Otara* and on Waiheke and a car hit a pillar in Hillcrest.
We received reports of a transformer door being left open in Howick during the week. Our contractors attended and secured the door.
GAS
Emergency services advised us that contractors had struck a gas pipe in Pakuranga during the week. The gas supply was unaffected, and the necessary repairs were completed.
PROJECTS
An undergrounding project in Golf Road, Epsom, is tracking well. Underground ducts and cables have been installed, and the project is at the stage where crews are progressively transferring customers’ electricity supply to the underground cables. Special tree protection measures are in place to protect the Dutch Elms that line the street, and a fulltime arborist is on site to supervise during civil works. Vector is using a new kind of matting for the temporary pedestrian walkways at this site, keeping mud at bay and the site neat and tidy.
