Wendy’s, company looks to fill 56 jobs
The world’s southernmost Wendy’s is to open in Dunedin, with ground works now underway at the South Dunedin site.
The region’s first Wendy’s outlet at 369 Anderson’s Bay Rd will mean the creation of 50 new jobs for crew and six for management.
It will be the South Island’s second Wendy’s, with the New Zealand-owned burger chain opening in Hornby, Christchurch late last year.
The garden city’s first Wendy’s restaurant in Hereford St lasted only three months before the 2011 earthquake forced it to close.
With building consent for Dunedin now issued and the contractor underway, Wendy’s CEO Danielle Lendich hopes the nation’s - and the world’s - southernmost Wendy’s will be open by early next year.
Wendy’s has big expectations for Dunedin, says Lendich, with its Christchurch restaurant setting a new world record for sales in its first seven days, which has yet to be beaten.
“There are lots of Wendy’s lovers in the South and Dunedinites will have their first taste of Wendy’s very soon. We’ve been looking for a site for some time, but it has been a case of being patient and finding the right location.”
Lendich says Wendy’s is currently recruiting for management positions and crew positions will be advertised early next year. Anyone interested in working for Wendy’s should keep an eye on the company’s website.
The new restaurant will boast café style seating and group seating for larger dining parties, a Drive Thru and a new two-sided grill system that cooks the meat faster and enhances food safety.
In keeping with company’s new look in the United States, an evolved store design will also see the Dunedin restaurant sporting a recognisable new red blade, white window and new logo.
The addition of the Dunedin restaurant will bring the total number of Wendy’s in New Zealand to 22, with three outlets opened last year including Christchurch and two in Hamilton.
Lendich says the family-owned business is also on target to open in Whangarei next year and is looking at other sites in Dunedin and Christchurch, with a target of 50 stores nationwide over the long term.
