From Catwalk to Cake
What happens when you take the hottest catwalk trends from this year’s Paris, New York, Milan and London Fashion Weeks and give them to Auckland’s top cakers? Shore City’s Art of Cake Awards 2014.
From the 7th to 28th of August, six of Auckland’s top cakers will be competing for the public’s vote to see who has the best-dressed cake. Each cake, up to 1.2 metres tall, is inspired by the caker’s choice from five Fashion Week trends – La Vie en Rose, Wild Things, Cutting Edge, Shine Bright and Eccen-trick!
With 28 entries submitted for this year’s awards, a judging panel of fashion’s finest has selected the five finalists who will compete against last year’s Art of Cake winner, Sondra Vicelich from Sweet Bites Cakes.
The 2014 judging panel were: Leonie Barlow, founder of fashion and beauty blog The Style Insider; renowned fashion stylist and newly appointed Fashion Director at Remix magazine, Kylie Cooke; and acclaimed photographer Fiona Quinn.
"I was blown away by the calibre of entries for this year’s Art of Cake competition,” says judge Leonie Barlow. “While it was great to see such incredible creativity, it made selecting the finalists very difficult.”
The 2014 finalists are Sondra Vicelich from Sweet Bites (2013 winner), Melissa Fleming from Miss Melicious, Elina Prawito from Bake-a-Boo Cakes, Kerry Morris from Eat Cake, Melanie-Jane Gee from Cake Circus and Rae and Ngaio Coppins from Celebration Cakes.
The cakes will be unveiled at the launch evening at Shore City in Takapuna on Thursday 7th of August. The free 3 week exhibition will finish onThursday 28th of August, in the middle of New Zealand Fashion Week, with the announcement of this year’s winning caker.
“We look forward to being able to showcase our craft and hopefully defend the title,” says 2013 winner Sondra Vicelich. “We chose to go with ‘Shine Bright’, because it instantly stood out as being a trend where we could experiment and develop new techniques. I really don't want to give away clues as to what we are going to do. A few of our techniques are untested.”
The public will also be able to attend six free Cake Craft sessions, during which the Art of Cake finalists will be sharing their cake decorating secrets. Dates and times will be announced on Shore City’s website: www.shore-city.co.nz
Enjoy the sweet spectacle and vote for Auckland’s best cake artist from the 7th to 28th of August at the Shore City Art of Cake Awards 2014.
