Special Olympics gifted thousands from the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce
New Zealand’s largest sports organisation for people with intellectual disabilities is almost $10,000 better off
following a Quiz Night organised by the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Special Olympics New Zealand, which provides year-round sports training and competition, and leadership opportunities
for people with intellectual disabilities, was selected by the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce as the sole beneficiary
of its Charity Quiz Night held on 20 June.
The Charity Quiz Night was attended by 150 people from the Hutt Valley business community and compeered by The Breeze
radio presenter Kath Bier and ShowPro DJ and MC Richard Mills.
In addition to the Quiz, an auction was held with prizes ranging from Xero training, Masterpet items, a Wellington
Phoenix Football Club shirt, artworks, an underwater camera, beauty vouchers, and photography offers.
In total $9153.00 was raised for Special Olympics New Zealand from the auction and additional donations.
“The Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce has been incredibly supportive of Special Olympics New Zealand and we are very
thankful for its generosity. Special Olympics New Zealand was founded in Hutt Valley in 1983 and we have a long standing
relationship with the Hutt Valley business community. We were thrilled that the Chamber chose Special Olympics New
Zealand as its preferred charity for the Quiz Night,” says Kathy Gibson, Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics New
Zealand.
“The funds raised by Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce will go a long way toward the further development of our athletes.
We have a busy six months ahead of us with more than 100 events still to be held nationally, including more than 25 in
the Lower North Island; and athletes beginning to train for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles,
California next July. Community donations like this help enable us to provide our talented athletes with more
opportunities to achieve their sporting goals.”
Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce will present the donation cheque to Special Olympics New Zealand at the organisation’s
Head Office (Pelorus Trust Sports House, 93 Hutt Park Rd, Seaview) on Thursday 17 July at 9.45 am.
