Federated Farmers and Beef + Lamb New Zealand to
cooperate on regional policy
Sheep and beef farmers will have a stronger voice in the regions on environmental issues, through an agreement between Federated Farmers and Beef + Lamb New Zealand.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand has added a regional policy capacity to its national and international policy activities directed at sustainability through a contract with Federated Farmers, to use their regional policy network, Beef + Lamb New Zealand Chief Executive, Dr Scott Champion said.
“Federated Farmers has an excellent regional network and rather than duplicate that, we have reached an agreement to use their resources on regional environmental issues. We think this is the most efficient way of using sheep and beef farmers’ money to strengthen our voice in this important area,” Dr Champion said.
This initiative follows the recent appointment of a Beef + Lamb New Zealand Environment Extension Manager who will oversee extension activity to provide sheep and beef farmers with the tools to manage their farms more sustainably.
Federated Farmers Chief Executive, Conor English said he was very pleased to be collaborating with Beef + Lamb New Zealand.
“It makes a lot of sense to use our specialist knowledge and resources to cover off this area for sheep and beef farmers.
“Federated Farmers has a long tradition of representing farmers at the regional and national level and has a good understanding and expertise in regional council processes and freshwater science,” he said.
“We also see this as an opportunity for Beef + Lamb New Zealand and Federated Farmers to develop joint policy and to work together for the good of all farmers,” Mr English concluded.
