Southern region’s supreme homes revealed
A new build in Queenstown and a renovation in Wanaka have been named this year’s finest Southern homes, winning Supreme Awards in the Southern Region Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year.
John Gavin Construction took out five regional awards for a home in Queenstown, including a Gold Award and the Westpac New Homes over $2 million category, as well as the Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for House of the Year. The company also received the Craftsmanship Award and Outdoor Living Award.
Dunlop Builders was awarded the Southern Region Registered Master Builders Supreme Award for Renovation of the Year, as well as the Future-Proof Building Renovation Award over $500,000 for its Wanaka renovation.
The judges said John Gavin Construction’s winning home was a complex build, boasting immaculate detailing on a grand scale.
“The design of this home required a builder of extraordinary skill in both domestic and commercial architecture. Coupled with a difficult site and testing climatic factors, this home posed its fair share of challenges,” they said.
“With well-crafted exterior timberwork and immaculate stonework, the materials blended into one another and the landscape seamlessly. The detailing is extraordinary – visually simple but complex in its solutions. This is a build of international presence, by a builder who clearly takes pleasure in his work.”
Judges praised Dunlop Builders’ extensive renovation for adapting well to its surroundings.
“This renovation is the epitome of simplicity done well, tucking itself quietly and assuredly into this quiet Wanaka Street. It exudes quality in its detailing and use of materials, with impressive cedar work both internally and externally,” they said.
“The builder can be credited for creating a home which will be a delight at any time of year to those lucky enough to reside in its spaces – a most competent and successful renovation.”
The results were announced at a gala dinner on Saturday, 5 July at Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill. The event was attended by members of the local building industry and from Gore, Otago and the Southern Region Registered Master Builders.
There were 23 Gold Award winners from the Southern Region which will now be assessed alongside Gold Award winners from across the country to find the National Gold Reserve finalists, to be announced in early September.
National category winners, Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for Renovation of the Year and House of the Year will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November.
The Awards are made possible through the support of PlaceMakers, James Hardie, GIB, Nulook, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Future-Proof Building, Carters, ITM, Plumbing World, Resene, Westpac and Master Build Services.

About the Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year
The competition is structured on two levels – regional and national. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined using a points-based system. These award-winners are announced at 11 regional events held throughout New Zealand during July and August.
The top local Gold Award winners become Gold Reserve National Finalists, announced in early September. The national finalists are then re-judged by a panel of judges who determine the overall national winners, which are announced at a gala dinner in November.
