Pacific cable commitment welcomed
InternetNZ has welcomed the announcement of a $65m commitment by Government and its wholly-owned research network REANNZ
towards the construction of a new trans-Pacific fibre cable by prospective operator Hawaiki.
“A new connection across the Pacific would increase the resilience of New Zealand’s Internet,” says Chief Executive
Jordan Carter.
“A new connection would also increase competition for the business of local ISPs, and so would contribute to the end of
data caps and faster Internet access for New Zealanders. We regard the benefits of such a cable as significant, and they
will become more so as time goes by.
“The anchor tenancy by REANNZ is a sensible way to help Hawaiki get the business case over the line.
“Congratulations to the Government for making this commitment – and best of luck to Hawaiki in being able to secure all
the funding required, and starting construction of the cable,” Carter says.
