Aratere Update
Interislander ferry Aratere is refuelling today in Gladstone, Queensland, and is expected to depart for Wellington early this Saturday.
“Depending on the weather, Aratere’s estimated time of arrival in Wellington is Wednesday 2 July,” GM Interislander, Thomas Davis, said.
Once back in Wellington the ferry will undergo an estimated further week of commissioning, including Maritime New Zealand and other safety agency checks, as well as re-consigning and moving equipment, furniture and so on currently in use on the Stena Alegra to the Aratere.
Aratere will return to service once these processes are complete.
The temporary replacement ferry, Stena Alegra, is scheduled to leave Picton for Wellington at 10.15pm on Saturday on its last Cook Strait crossing.
Mr Davis said the Stena Alegra has done a great job during her stay.
“As of today, since January the Stena Alegra has carried approx. 45,500 passengers, about 34,300 vehicles, and moved 11,900 trucks during 449 trips across Cook Strait.
“In other words the Stena Alegra has been vital in supporting New Zealand’s critical rail ferry and passenger transport link over the last few months, and made a significant contribution to New Zealand’s economy.”
