New wellness developments for Polynesian Spa
Rotorua spa treatment icon Polynesian Spa is intensifying its focus on wellness and is confident about the city’s future
as a spa destination.
Polynesian Spa has recently embarked upon a re-development phase that focuses on its wellness and luxury offerings, as a
way of wholly and sustainably capturing the site’s unique geothermal resources.
The Polynesian Spa offers a wide range of spa treatments including massage therapies, facials and body wraps, as well as
hot mineral bathing.
Chief executive George White says the latest developments are about going above and beyond customer expectations.
“Polynesian Spa has always been a great company, but we are looking at being more than that and taking our luxury
wellness products and services to the next level. Rotorua is a unique place with a unique offering and we need to ensure
we stay on top of our game to meet increasing demand and visitors’ expectations,” he says.
“We want every person who walks into and out of the Polynesian Spa to feel special, relaxed and with a sense of having
been healed.”
As part of its wellness and luxury re-development, Polynesian Spa has fully refurbished its Aix massage rooms, installed
‘rain’ showers and beauty products in the Lake Spa changing rooms, added a juice bar in the adult pool area, revamped
its café menu and products available in the shop, along with new package deals on offer and further developments
planned.
“We want to offer a ‘total luxury’ experience, providing top-class therapeutic treatments – in today’s stressful, busy
world people are increasingly looking for ways to de-stress and turning to the likes of spa treatments.
“Geothermal bathing is great for relaxation and blood flow as well as soothing for aching muscles and regular massages
reduce stress, tension and anxiety, releasing the body’s feel-good chemicals.”
Mr White says as the geothermal capital of New Zealand, Rotorua needs to step up to fill the demand for a national spa
destination.
“There is a growing focus on encouraging people to manage their own health care needs to prevent illness and people are
looking to the likes of spa treatments as a way to help maintain a healthy body and mind. It’s up to us, as operators,
to ensure we maintain the highest possible standards to ensure that Rotorua can build on its spa destination status – I
think there is a lot of potential.
“We are also unique in Rotorua, in that our hot mineral pools use two distinct types of mineral water, sourced from two
geothermal springs and the combination of those two springs is exclusive to Polynesian Spa. The Rachael Spring produces
silica-laden water that nourishes the skin, while water from the Priest Spring is slightly acidic, relieving sore
muscles.”
Mr White says that although the international visitor market is important, the biggest focus has always been – and will
remain – on the domestic market, inviting Kiwis to experience the geothermal marvels and benefits available in their own
backyard. Hot mineral bathing is becoming more and more popular in Kiwi culture.
Polynesian Spa has been an icon of the Rotorua tourism industry since it was established in 1972. The world-leading
natural mineral bathing and spa treatment facility was built on the site of historic bath houses for which the city
first became world famous in the 1800s.
