Forecast winter conditions at Coronet Peak have ‘silver lining’
A return to wintery conditions at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak with snow and cold temperatures tomorrow (Thursday June 19) is great news for skiers and boarders – but not so good for our warm-blooded Australian visitors from Channel Seven’s
Sunrise.
The cold change has prompted the Channel Seven team to delay its live broadcast from Coronet Peak until Friday morning (June 20).
And the change in dates means a change in entertainment – Kiwi singing sensation Stan Walker and songstress Ginny
Blackmore will now perform their hit single ‘Holding You’ at the new Sunrise broadcast location outside Accor’s Novotel
Queenstown Lakeside from 9am tomorrow (Thursday).
The programme will then head up to Coronet Peak for its live broadcast on Friday morning – where Australia’s leading
urban pop group Justice Crew will perform their hottest songs live from 9am including their number one single ‘Que
Sera’.
Ski area manager Ross Copland said while Coronet Peak could not host Stan and Ginny, featuring Justice Crew combined
with new snow and clear skies meant “every cloud has its silver lining”.
“It was a tough call, but we want to put on the best show we can for our Aussie neighbours,” said Mr Copland.
“We made the call to switch broadcast dates, but because of other commitments, that also meant the bands had to swap.
“Stan fans will still be able to get their ‘fix’ in downtown Queenstown tomorrow, while we’re looking forward to
welcoming Justice Crew on Fridayand we’re expecting a lot of excited young locals up here early to see them perform.”
“We’ll be playing the England versus Uruguay football World Cup match on Friday morning from 7am in the café and will be
serving breakfast burgers and coffee. So people are welcome to come up early, watch some football live on the big
screen, catch the Justice Crew and the live broadcast, and make a day of it.
“We’ll have an area especially set aside for fans to watch the Sunrise broadcast and Justice Crew. People should
remember to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear for the snow as they’ll be at the top of the Magic Carpet in the
learners’ area.
“Especially with any new snow, it’s a huge opportunity for us to showcase our fantastic Queenstown skiing to viewers
across the ditch.”
Mr Copland said the expected wintery top-up was great news for the ski area on the eve of the ten-day American Express
Queenstown Winter Festival.
For those requiring transport up the mountain, Snowline Express bus service will departing every 20 minutes from the
Queenstown Snow Centre.
