Coronet Peak ski area wins prestigious Green Ribbon Award
Queenstown’s Coronet Peak ski area has been awarded the 2014 Green Ribbon Award for its ongoing environmentally
sustainable procedures.
The winners were announced by Environment Minister, the Hon Amy Adams, at an awards dinner in Wellington last night (Monday June 16).
Coronet Peak took top honours in the ‘large business leadership’ category for its work to reduce waste, carbon
emissions, energy use and fuel consumption.
The Green Ribbon Awards, established in 1989, acknowledges businesses and individuals that make outstanding
contributions to protecting New Zealand’s environment for future generations.
Ski area manager Ross Copland was at the ceremony to receive the award on behalf of the team and said he was “ecstatic”
with the win.
“We’re extremely grateful to receive the recognition - our staff has put a lot of hard work to deliver a great
sustainable business strategy,” said Mr Copland.
“We continually educate our staff on environmental issues and have a mountain-wide clean-up every summer to keep the
area pristine.
“We’ve put multiple initiatives in place which have reduced our electricity usage by 10% and fuel consumption by 60,000
litres.
“We see Coronet Peak as an advocate for sustainable business practices in New Zealand so we’re working hard to ensure we
‘walk the talk’.
“There’s still a long way to go, but we’re making great progress we are definitely more aware of the importance of
preserving our environment having seen the warmest winter on record last season,” he said.
“Ensuring the outstanding beauty of Coronet Peak is protected is of the utmost importance to us and forms a core part of
our business. We look forward to continuing the good work and finding even more great ways of ‘being green’.”
