Canterbury Butchers Carve up the Competition
The Alto Young Butcher and Competenz Butcher Apprentice of the Year is well underway with the Upper South Island Regional held yesterday in Christchurch.
Jeremy Garth of New World Woolston, Christchurch and Timmy Watson from Ashburton’s Allenton Meat Centre, drew a tie in the hotly contested Alto Young Butchery regional.
Competenz Butcher Apprentice regional winner Rowan Lee of Pak’ n Save Riccarton, Christchurch demonstrated he was a cut above the rest in yesterday’s competition, joining the two young butchers in the next stage of the competition.
Jeremy, Timmy and Rowan will be up against the country’s finest butchers at the Grand Final in September with a tour around Europe up for grabs.
Rowan, who began his butchery career with his father at the age of 17, is extremely passionate about his craft.
“I go out of my way to experience all I can. I find butchery really inspiring - the amount of imagination you can put into creating products is limitless,” says Rowan.
During the regional each entrant completes a written exam, an interview and a practical cutting test.
Timmy believes his attention to detail, passion for quality food and years of experience working in the shop front give him a point of difference in the competition.
Jeremy has been practicing his trade for 10 years now and brings a unique flair to the competition with his love of gourmet food.
Winners from the five regionals will then go onto contend in a full day of intense competition at the Alto Young Butcher and Competenz Butcher Apprentice of the Year Grand Final on Friday 12 September at the Viaduct Events Centre in Auckland.
The competition is supported by Alto, Competenz, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Cabernet Foods, Dunninghams, Hellers, Kerry Ingredients, New Zealand Pork, Wilson Hellaby, Natural Farm, Tegel.
