The Gisborne - Hawkes Bay Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects and MTG Hawke’s Bay are very pleased to present a talk by Pip Cheshire, recipient of the NZIA Gold Medal 2013 on Wednesday 18 June 2014 at the MTG Century Theatre.
For ten years Cheshire Architects has been working on the Marsden Cross Heritage Park project in the Bay of Islands. This project commemorates the first formal engagement of Maori and Pakeha 25 years before the Treaty of Waitangi and Pip will illustrate progress to date on this fascinating project.
It will also be an opportunity to hear Pip’s reflection on New Zealand’s representation at the ground zero of global architecture, the Venice Biennale, from which he has recently returned.
Pip Cheshire is director of Cheshire Architects and President of the New Zealand Institute of Architects. In 2013 he was the recipient of the NZIA Gold Medal for career achievement. This award was conferred upon Pip for his incredible contribution to architecture in New Zealand.
During his career, Pip has been a proponent and exponent of adventurous and progressive design.
He has undertaken heritage work in Antarctica and various pro bono projects; he has taught and mentored young architects and written, lectured and presented on architecture.
Cheshire Architects has undertaken a number of well-regarded projects, including the transformation of Britomart and the City Works Depot in Auckland, and a number of housing projects of varied scale and style.
Ezra Kelly, NZIA Gisborne–Hawke’s Bay Branch Chairperson says “We are pleased to be able to host Pip Cheshire in Hawke’s Bay. Pip’s architectural career to date spans three and a half decades, and is notable for its continued development. This has been underpinned throughout by his delight in challenging the assumed, in the search for an original expression of Architecture in Aotearoa.”
“We look forward to a lively and forthright presentation by one of New Zealand’s most passionate architects and are delighted to be able to open this talk to the public.” Kelly says.
