Racetech fire investigation
WorkSafe New Zealand investigated the actions of the crews dealing with the Racetech fire, and has concluded it will take no action against the Fire Service or any individuals involved in the incident.
“Although we concluded that some of those involved in fighting the fire did not fully follow Fire Service protocols, we are satisfied that the Fire Service has recognised and is addressing the failures identified in our investigation,” Brett Murray, General Manager WorkSafe NZ said.
“The Fire Service undertook an extensive internal review and is implementing practice changes to achieve improved standards of compliance with their own safety protocols amongst its staff. Emergency service operations are often carried out under extreme duress, so it is important that organisational protocols are followed closely at every incident.
“The Corrective Action Plan addresses the failures we identified at this incident and we are satisfied that this will ensure safety requirements are restated, reinforced and actively followed by all Fire Service staff,” Mr Murray said.
