Normal Melling Service to Resume Tomorrow, 29/5

MEDIA ADVISORY

28.5.2014

Normal train services on the Melling Line will resume tomorrow morning (Thursday 29 May) following yesterday’s incident at the Melling station.

The train involved in the incident was removed from the site last night and all track and infrastructure repair work has now been completed.

KiwiRail apologises for the disruption to services following the incident and has worked as quickly as possible to get the line reopened.

Bus replacements will continue this evening between Melling and Petone and customers are advised to check the Tranz Metro website for more information and updates – www.tranzmetro.co.nz

General Manager Passenger, Deborah Hume, says that investigations into the incident are continuing.

“It would be premature to focus on any one possible cause of the incident until the investigations are completed.

“Safety is our first priority and we would never operate a train if there were any concerns about its brake performance.

“Given our maintenance programme, and the current operating performance of the remainder of the Matangi fleet, there is no reason for us to be concerned about the safety of the Matangi or Ganz Mavag trains we operate.”
