Monthly traffic update
6.0% | International passenger volumes (excluding transit passengers) were 6.0% higher in April 2014 than the previous year. Passenger numbers were positively impacted by a late Easter, which was mid-April in 2014 compared to the end of March in 2013. The majority of international passenger growth was from Australians and New Zealanders travelling at Easter and during school holidays. | 17.5% | Monthly visitor arrivals from Australia were up 17.5% in April 2014. This increase was related to the later timing of Easter and school holidays, which offset the decrease in Australian arrivals in March 2014. This was also the main reason for the increase in monthly visitors from the UK (+23.1%) and Hong Kong (+89.0%) in April 2014. |
47.9% | Auckland Airport’s recently released Ambition 2025 strategy identifies a number of emerging “high opportunity targets and actions”. It highlighted the need for New Zealand to capture an increasing share of the international visitors from key growth markets, including the emerging markets in Indonesia, Brazil and India. Visitor arrivals from these three markets performed strongly in April 2014, with Indonesia up 47.9%, Brazil up 37.3% and India up 29.3%. | (29.2%) | International passenger volumes (excluding transit passengers) at Cairns Airport were 29.2% lower in April 2014 compared to the previous year. There were a number of reasons for the lower passenger numbers, including: reductions in traffic to Papua New Guinea due to the removal of Australian visa processing on arrival; the change of a Jetstar service to Darwin (previously with an onward connection to Singapore) from international to domestic; and the cancellation of flights due to Cyclone Ita. However, offsetting the decrease in direct international passengers, domestic passenger numbers have increased over the last year as international passengers increasingly visit Cairns from within Australia. |
