March 2014 Quarter
Canterbury holds off Auckland again to take out the top spot in the latest ASB/Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard.
Canterbury’s stellar performance reflects the effects of the earthquake rebuild, with the ramp-up in construction activity surging through to lift the wider economy. Employment growth has been particularly strong and bodes well for household spending in the region.
However, Otago has been the standout region over Q1, surging up the rankings to share second equal place with Auckland on the back of strong growth in employment and retail spending.
Auckland remains in second place in the latest Scoreboard. Population growth and house price growth are the strongest in the country, which is boosting residential construction and consumer confidence.
The ASB / Main Report Regional Economic Scoreboard takes the latest quarterly regional statistics and ranks the economic performance of New Zealand’s 16 regional economic areas.
