Convention centre deal welcomed boost for city, says Chamber

The proposed purpose-built convention centre and five-star hotel for Wellington has real potential to deliver opportunities to the city and the region, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Raewyn Bleakley.

“Having an international company setting up business in the centre of the city will advance Wellington’s brand and our growing reputation as a place to do business.

“With 14% of the convention market, Wellington is well-placed to capitalise on the strength of a purpose-built convention centre and a five-star hotel. This will be a real draw card for the city.

“It will bring in more high-value visitors and help drive air connectivity.

“It will also allow us to showcase our strengths – our tourist attractions, our environment, our ICT sector, and our education sector, as well as making us more attractive to businesses and organisations looking for good access to government.

“Wellington’s entertainment, dining and existing accommodation sector will all likely benefit from the higher numbers of convention attendees.

“It is vital that the business case stacks up and can show a good investment for ratepayers, though I am heartened by the early assurance from the council that there will be no capital investment or construction risk for the city.

“If that is the case, this could well be a win-win which will show big benefits for the city and the region for many years to come.

“I’d like to congratulate all those involved for getting the proposal to this point. There has clearly been a lot of work going on behind the scenes.”
