Bay of Many Coves Offers Picture Perfect Retreat

Everything that Simon Woolf does is picture perfect and he’s now giving novice and intermediate photographers the
opportunity to be the same.
Bay Of Many Coves in the Marlborough Sounds has engaged Simon to provide two photographic retreats at the idyllic lodge
this year, the first taking place over the June 27-29 weekend.
Simon, who’s a Fellow of the Photographic Society of New Zealand and Principal of leading Wellington image company,
Photography by Woolf, will spend the weekend honing skills and improving techniques.
At the Bay Of Many Coves there’s a variety of stunning photographic opportunities including the unique flora and fauna,
landscape and marine and cultural subjects. Simon will enhance skills by introducing a broad range of styles including
portrait, landscape, macro and night shoots.
Around Bay Of Many Coves is a pristine panorama and Simon’s tuition will allow participants to record those images for
life.
The five-star lodge, through its June retreat, provides that moment to photograph marine life, rare native birds and
impressive landscapes. “It’s a drop dead gorgeous setting for photography,” Simon comments.
“In the whole of New Zealand it’s one of my top five places to photograph, it’s so utterly photogenic.”
The retreat focuses on the superb natural environment and Simon will provide “a complete package which will include
wildlife and landscape photography and portraiture.” There’s also the added bonus of having one-on-one mentoring.
In addition he wants to challenge participants to produce something less literal and more fine art based. “I want to get
people off the manual setting to do something far more creative,” he says.
A fun exercise will be a portraiture shoot of Captain Cook against an environmental background. The man, who first
chartered the coastline of New Zealand, is particularly appropriate as he made Ship Cove, close to Bay Of Many Coves,
his headquarters during his three voyages here. Simon Woolf has engaged a person who will recreate Captain Cook for the
exercise.
The surrounding vista is only rivalled by the Bay Of Many Coves itself. The lodge, cocooned among native flora at the
water’s edge, provides the ultimate experience for participants to relax at the end of the day.
They will enjoy the luxury accommodation with fine wine and cuisine including a special seven- course degustation dinner
prepared by Executive Chef, Hannes Bareiter.
Co-owner of the Bay Of Many Coves, Murray McCaw, is delighted Simon Woolf is again returning to guide novices and more
experienced photographers in the art of recording rare and endangered wildlife.
“June is an ideal time for people to pause what they’re doing, take a break, enjoy our lodge at the start of winter and
receive instruction from one of New Zealand’s best,” he says.
“Simon is a delightful host and skilled tutor. Recently he took a photo of the Royal couple with baby George at
Government House. When it was presented to them on their departure, the Duchess of Cambridge was captivated and
commented it was ‘the photo of the tour.’”
