Glenorchy Has Its Busiest Summer in Years
Famous movie scenes are just one of the reasons that the streets of Glenorchy -- at the top of Queenstown’s Lake
Wakatipu -- have been so full of tourists. The question “Where’s Paradise?” is now one of the most frequently-asked in
the tiny village, so much so that it now has its own signpost on the one and only roundabout.
And well before the official Hobbit guidebook is launched in November this year (2014) visitors are keen to see the many movie backdrops in the area for themselves.
But it’s not just movie scenes that are bringing tourists, according to China Markets manager Tracey Cui of Ngāi Tahu
Tourism. “The scenery along the lakeside from Queenstown and then the mountains at the top of the lake are exactly what
many customers want to see when they come to New Zealand,” she says.
“A trip to Glenorchy and then up the Dart River also shows them farm animals, the forest within the National Park and
jet boating, all easily done in a half-day trip from Queenstown.
“The diversity of any trip to Glenorchy is a real drawcard and seen by many Asian tourists as extremely good value.”
With the market from China continuing to grow, and new flights combining with targeted activity in Asian emerging
markets by Tourism New Zealand, Glenorchy can only expect to get busier in the years ahead.
