Big Winners at the Canon Media Awards 2014
The big stories of 2013 including illegal spying by the GCSB, the Len Brown affair and dramatic coverage of Wellington's earthquakes were recognised in many of the major accolades handed out at the Canon Media Awards in Auckland on Friday night.
The Dominion Post won the coveted Canon Newspaper of the Year title – which is chosen from the top metropolitan daily and weekly newspapers, regional and community titles – and also took out the metropolitan Newspaper of the Year award (plus 30,000 circulation).
The national journalism awards are a beacon of excellence for newspapers, magazines and digital media, and this year marks a 40-year milestone for the awards. A record 525 industry members and guests attended the ceremony to celebrate this success.
In the regional newspaper category, for papers with a circulation of less than 30,000, the Whangarei-based Northern Advocate took top honours, while the award for Best Weekly Newspaper went to the Weekend Herald. The North Shore Times was judged Best Community Newspaper, while Auckland’s Metro won Best Newsstand Magazine.
In the digital awards, stuff.co.nz won Best News Site while Yahoo NZ was declared the Best Website overall.
Groundbreaking scoops dominated newspaper writing awards. Fairfax Media’s political reporter Andrea Vance was crowned Reporter of the Year, with Tony Wall of the Sunday Star-Times taking out Feature Writer of the Year. 2
Metro’s Steve Braunias was crowned
the Magazine Feature Writer of the Year, while also
receiving accolades for his work as a crime and justice
writer and columnist. Jane Clifton of the New Zealand
Listener was judged Columnist of the Year with Cameron
Slater taking the award for Best Blog on the strength of
Whale Oil’s Len Brown scoop.
The New Zealand Herald’s Rod Emmerson and Richard Robinson were judged Cartoonist and Press Photographer of the Year respectively.
Yusuke Mizoguchi, Managing Director of Canon New Zealand, explains the awards continue to be a fantastic celebration of New Zealand’s media industry.
“It is a pleasure to continue to support the industry, recognise the outstanding work that has been produced over the last year and commend the hugely talented and passionate people that form New Zealand’s media landscape,” said Mizoguchi.
