Kane Sweetman of Colliers appointed RICS NZ chair

12 May 2014 — Kane Sweetman, national director of valuation for Colliers International, has been appointed chair of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in New Zealand.

Sweetman is the fourth RICS chair in New Zealand but the first born and raised New Zealander to take the position, reflecting the increasing globalisation of the organisation. Originally based in the UK, RICS has about 180,000 members across the world, and will soon have more members outside the UK than inside of it.

“With many changes afoot in the New Zealand property profession, it is an exciting time for RICS at the local level,” Sweetman says. “As all of us operate in an increasingly global market, we aim to leverage the resources from the global RICS organisation to continue raising the standards of professionalism in the property and construction sectors here in New Zealand.”

RICS (the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) is an international professional body which sets the global standards in the construction, property and land sectors. In New Zealand membership has grown quickly in recent years as professionals recognise the benefits of membership.

Members include quantity surveyors, building surveyors, valuers, commercial property consultants, project managers, property managers, contractors, developers and real estate agents.

Kane is a RICS fellow with 19 years’ experience in the property market in New Zealand, Australia and the UK. As the new RICS chair he replaces Alan McMahon, who was chair for four years until his resignation at the annual RICS awards function on May 6 2014.
