Commission must take the time to get broadband prices right

InternetNZ has lodged a cross-submission to the Commerce Commission as it works to set final prices for copper broadband services, making the case for a more measured process that will see fair prices set.

InternetNZ CEO Jordan Carter says “the Commerce Commission needs to take the time to get this right.

“The Commission is charged by law to be the consumer guardian when it comes to regulating broadband prices. The timeframe the Commission is aiming at won’t give it time to do the job that needs to be done. We say that, and the industry says it too in their submissions.

“Chorus is the only company that wants a rushed process, but they would say that, wouldn’t they? The comparably simple FPP took two years to conclude and Chorus then went to court claiming the Commission’s process was wrong.

“We strongly urge the Commission to abandon the headlong rush, and take the time to get these prices right. That’s how it can best guard consumer interests – and it’s the best way to make sure Kiwis end up paying a fair price for copper broadband,” Jordan Carter says.
