No Service Disruption Expected at the Lyttelton Port of Christchurch as a Result of Strike Action
LPC expects normal operations to continue irrespective of the impending strike action by The Rail and Maritime Transport
Union (RMTU).
The RMTU, representing eleven Logistics Officers employed by Lyttelton Port of Christchurch, has given notice of the
Logistics Officers’ intention to take strike action continuously from Friday 2 May 2014. The eleven Logistics Officer
will stop work between 11pm and 7am daily. LPC will use existing Management staff to cover for this period and ensure no
disruption to normal services.
The notice is issued in relation to bargaining for the renewal of their collective agreement and their salary claim
which seeks to increase pay rates by 4% with no productivity improvements being offered through the bargaining.
LPC Chief Executive, Peter Davie, said the Company have acted in good faith and participated in a number of bargaining
meetings, including mediation.
“We have worked hard to come to a resolution since the end of January and have tried to be constructive in order to
reach an appropriate settlement,” said Peter Davie.
“Our Logistic Officers are paid a very competitive market salary. They work hard and are professional and we believe
this has been reflected in the fair pay increase that has been offered. Our offer of 2.85% is well in excess of current
inflation of approximately 1.5%”.
“I’m surprised and disappointed they have chosen to take this unhelpful course of action.”
