Historical Arrowtown Cottage On The Market With New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty
An historical Arrowtown stone cottage dating back to the 1950s is up for auction with leading luxury real estate company New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty.
With a light and airy open-plan layout, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is located just a stone’s throw from central Arrowtown and is the ideal holiday home or could suit a couple looking for a property with character.
Over the years this charming cottage has been lovingly extended and renovated with full modern amenities.
Long-time Arrowtown local Taylor Reed remembers the cottage well.
“It was originally built by Elaine Dunne who was a Southland Girls High art teacher. She built it as a holiday home back in 1958,” said Mr Reed.
“It was a great spot for a holiday. There was the old ice rink down the street at Wilcox Green and busloads of people would come from Gore and Invercargill to ice-skate.”
Former local and neighbour John Baird also recalls the property.
“I believe it was originally a simple hardwood home with only one bedroom. The Roughans lived there for 40 odd years – funnily enough there was a large rowan tree on the front lawn,” said Mr Baird.
Realtors Vanessa Sharp and Carl Johnston are marketing the quaint Bedford Street home, the husband and wife team joined the New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty Arrowtown team less than a year ago and have already built an impressive portfolio of properties and marketed and sold a number of homes in the area.
Ms Sharp describes the cottage as a “one of a kind” that “oozes character and charm”.
“Properties like this in Arrowtown don’t come on the market very often and it’s in such an ideal central location,” she said.
“It has stunning interior stone walls and wooden beams - the entire home has been beautifully renovated.
“The cottage can be separated into two fully self-contained units by a lockable door to make a perfect holiday home or it could be used as a single-unit family home.”
“A ‘clean-air’ wood-burner fireplace, doubled with underfloor heating, means this home will stay cosy all year round.”
“There’s plenty of room for summer entertaining with an outdoor stone deck surrounded by beautiful established gardens on a fully-fenced private section.
“The perfect balance of old and new makes this property modern and comfortable while still keeping its authentic historic feel,” Ms Sharp said.
The 17 Bedford Street stone cottage will be auctioned by New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty on May 17, 2014 onsite at 1pm.
