Speights' Cup Spills Over With Silver

It was a podium finish for Speight’s Triple Hop Pilsner at the 2014 World Beer Cup in Colorado, USA, taking out a rare silver medal in the international lager category.

The World Beer Cup (WBC) is right up there with the International Brewing Awards (IBA) in the UK, where Speight’s Triple Hop Pilsner scooped a gold medal last year, the first time a New Zealand beer had ever won gold.

Together the WBC and IBA represent the world’s most important and prestigious
beer awards and now Speight’s Triple Hop Pilsner has been recognised in both, a
magnificent achievement for Speight’s and further indication of the pedigree of
New Zealand’s beer scene.

In a hotly contested category with 89 entries from all round the globe, it’s nothing short of a coup for a New Zealand beer to win a medal. New Zealand beers haven’t medalled at the World Beer Cup for 14 years, but this year as well as the Speight’s silver, Wellington brewery Garage Project also scooped a silver in the Wood & Barrel Aged Strong Beer category.

Dave Pearce from Lion says: “This is a huge achievement for our Speight’s brewers, competing with the best in the world. In brewing terms, the medals we’ve won at the World Beer Cup and the International brewing Awards last year are the equivalent of Lorde winning a Grammy, Peter Jackson winning an Oscar, or any sporting medals or trophies. It’s incredibly significant for us at Speight’s, but also for the wider New Zealand brewing industry.

The medals won by Speight’s and Garage Project at the World Beer Cup, as well as the golds Speight’s and Mac’s won at the International Brewing Awards, and the big medal haul by Kiwi beers at Australian International Beer Awards last year, prove that New Zealand beers and brewers truly are world class.”

• The World Beer Cup is a global competition that ultimately creates greater
consumer awareness about different beer styles and flavour profiles while
promoting international brewing excellence.

• Every two years, a highly qualified professional panel of beer judges honors the
top three beers in 91 categories with gold, silver, and bronze awards.

• 4,754 beers were entered from 1,403 breweries in 58 countries.

• There were 94 beer styles judged by 219 Judges from 31 countries.
