Generation Y leaders publicly recognised

The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board, which regulates the industry, announced today the winners of its Youth Leadership Awards. The awards, in recognition of potential to lead, academic accomplishment and competence in qualifying to join the industry, mark the Boards Centenary year, and were presented by the Minister for Building and Construction Hon Maurice Williamson.

The Board publicly acknowledged award winners from each trade, at a special ceremony in Wellington on 25th March. Along with the recognition of the award, winners Kieran Rutherford (26) – plumbing catgegory, Kurt Davies (21) – gasfitting category, and Cameron Winsor (24) – drainlaying category, each received an eight day Outward Bound package.

“We want to support the young people in the industry. Encourage leadership and recognise those who have demonstrated potential. Many of New Zealand’s best talent have benefited from the opportunity to learn from Outward Bound courses for the past fifty years. We see this as an invaluable experience to help develop their skills and continue to grow as prospective industry leaders,” Board Chairperson, Peter Jackson said.

The awards reinforce the Board’s strong stance on ensuring the highest professional standards in the industry to protect consumers.

“As the industry continues to evolve and current leadership retires, Generation Y will begin to become more prominent across the workforce. One reason for optimism is the example these award winners are demonstrating as they continue to actively transform the workplace”, Peter added.

Plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying carries huge risks if not undertaken by qualified and authorised people. Homeowners should not risk their family’s health and safety, or their property. Anyone carrying out sanitary plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying must be able to produce their licence card. Never assume anything, if in doubt ask for the card.

The licence card provides assurance that the work is being legally carried out by a competent tradesperson, who is authorised by the Board. Consumers can check to see if a plumber, gasfitter or tradesperson is authorised at the Boards website www.pgdb.co.nz.
