New World Carterton take out the 2014 Wellington New World Staff Netball Tournament
In a fun series designed for staff to be a part of New World’s sponsorship of the Silver Ferns, The Iconics from New World Carterton have won first place in the annual New World Staff Netball Tournament for Wellington. They will go on to compete against the provincial tournament winner in the overall championship final in Palmerston North next Saturday.
The team beat Village People from New World Khandallah 7-4 in a heated final game at the TSB Bank Arena in Wellington on Wednesday 26 March. Nine teams vied for the title, coming from New World stores in the Hutt, Wairarapa and Wellington City.
This is the second year New World Carterton has taken out the title, also winning first place in 2012. New World Porirua’s Different Like You took out the title of Best Supporting Team and Fair Play.
The stores train mixed teams of men and women to participate in 14-minute games, which are umpired by NZ Netball representatives.
This is the sixth year of the New World Netball Championship in which stores throughout the lower North Island can enter, though the first time the tournament has been split into two leagues of advanced and more social players, to encourage participation at all levels.
“The regional staff championships are team-building events for players and supporters and everyone’s there to have fun, but at the same time we have some really slick players so it’s important to keep the competition enjoyable and challenging for everyone,” says Foodstuffs Lower North Island Event Manager Kristie McGregor.
The winning team in the advanced league received the coveted tournament shield plus a medal and a $100 New World grocery voucher for each member. Team members from the runner-up team each received a $50 New World grocery voucher.
The winning team in the social league, Out with the old, in with the new from New World Karori, each received a $50 New World grocery voucher.
