BNZ ‘Bomber’ caught thanks to forensic science
The man who robbed BNZ’s Manukau store threatening staff with a fake bomb on January 24 has been sentenced to six years
in prison thanks to a BNZ security measure. The offender was forensically marked with SelectDNA during the robbery,
connecting him directly to the crime.
SelectDNA is a synthetic solution containing a unique DNA sequence that is triggered in the event of a robbery and
adheres to an offender’s equipment, clothing and skin.
BNZ head of enterprise security, Owen Loeffellechner says that these new forensic security measures the bank has
implemented across the entire store network provide a science that there is no escaping from.
“This conviction is very pleasing and helps with closure for all our staff subjected to what was a dramatic and
frightening crime. We are very grateful to the Police in achieving this outcome for our staff and the wider public,”
Loeffellechner says.
