Corporate Social Responsibility may be a marketing green wash for some businesses, but telecommunications company Digital Island are putting their money, and their hair, where their mouths are to “Shave for a Cure” in support of Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand (LBC).
Blair Stewart, Stu Cowdell and Glen Larsen, the three Founders and Directors of Digital Island, along with some brave staff members, all shaved their heads to raise money for LBC on Thursday 20 March. Their joint efforts have raised over $5,000 so far, and the donations are still coming in.
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families living with a blood cancer. It receives no government funding. The money raised by Shave for a Cure will go towards patient support programmes, research, information awareness, and advocacy.
Participating in Shave for a Cure was a natural extension for the Digital Island Directors whose business is built on social responsibility; they all regularly participate in charity events as well as promoting fanatical customer service and encouraging staff well-being through their DigiWell programme.
Digital Island Director Blair Stewart says “Shave for a Cure is a great event, and a very small sacrifice to help those battling cancer. Many staff, clients, friends and family members been hit by cancer in some way shape or form, and from experience a bit of hair loss is the last thing everyone is worried about.” Stewart says.
