Sealord fresh fish sales to double in Australia
More Australians than ever before will be enjoying Sealord MSC certified New Zealand hoki as a result of a deal with
Woolworths to stock New Zealand’s most sustainable fish* fresh.
The nation-wide programme to stock fresh New Zealand hoki across Australian supermarkets means that Sealord sales of New
Zealand fresh fish to Australia will more than double in 2014.
Sealord frozen products have been sold through Woolworths for more than 20 years and extending to fresh in season hoki
makes perfect sense.
“Australians love seafood and hoki’s sustainability credentials, its value for money and delicate taste make it a great
addition to Woolworths fresh fish counters,” says the General Manager of Sealord’s Consumer business, Jason Plato.
For Sealord, the deal represents several million dollars of new export business and an important step in the company’s
growth agenda in Australia.
Managing Director of Supermarkets and Petrol, Tjeerd Jegen, said Woolworths is delighted to be able to extend its
partnership with Sealord.
“Woolworths customers in Australia have embraced Sealord for many years and this expanded partnership between an iconic
New Zealand company and Australia’s fresh food people makes perfect sense,” he said.
Hoki has undergone a revival in both New Zealand and Australia in recent years, thanks in part to its availability as a
fresh fish option in supermarkets and fish markets during the extended fresh hoki season.
Sealord is aggressively promoting hoki in export markets and also took sustainable seafood chef, Tom Kime, to New
Zealand last year to spend time on-board Sealord vessel Otakou and develop a range of recipes using the deepwater fish species.
Tom’s popular seafood café in Sydney Fish & Co, serves hoki in NSW’s first MSC certified independent seafood restaurant.
‘Being sustainable is about everyday seafood choices, it has to be accessible and affordable,’ says Tom Kime.
* New Zealand hoki was the first white fish in the world to be certified by the global Marine Stewardship Council, and has now been certified for the 3rd time.
