Healthy home experiment kicks off
A house renovation project-meets-social experiment in central Auckland will transform a cold and mouldy villa in one of the city’s most desirable suburbs into a healthy and liveable home with the aim of setting a new benchmark for the quality of New Zealand homes.
The drive behind the HRV Pure Invironment Project comes from the fact the state of New Zealand’s housing stock is in a poor and unhealthy condition.
The project, led by home solutions company HRV, will take the 110-year-old villa at 45 Lincoln Street in Ponsonby, restore it to its former glory, and with the addition of top quality ventilation, heating and cooling solutions, and HRV’s latest innovation – a Whole Home Water Filtration system, the goal is to create one of New Zealand’s purest homes.

HRV’s chief executive Bruce Gordon says the HRV Pure Invironment Project will be the benchmark for creating a healthy and liveable home in New Zealand.
“It may be a Ponsonby house but it’s typical of homes around the country that are prone to mould and dampness which have adverse effects on the health of the household, especially children,” says Mr Gordon.
“The project will show Kiwi families how to fix damp, harmful living conditions and how to create a healthy environment for them and their kids.
“It’s also a real, tangible way of demonstrating HRV’s mission of reinventing the home invironment to improve the air quality in Kiwi homes which ultimately means improved health and well-being all round."
Just as important is the focus on retaining the heritage and essence of this grand old house, while adding sophisticated contemporary elements to give it a modern and stylish feel. The design and new lay out of the house will bring together the old with the new to create a healthy and beautiful family home.
Once the HRV Pure Invironment Project house is completed it will be sold by Auckland real estate agent Antonia Baker from real estate company The Property Market. The house will be marketed on Trade Me and sold at auction in early May.
A number of household New Zealand brands are partnering with HRV on the project to provide a complete energy-efficient, healthy living package with the new owner of the home getting a Toyota Prius c hybrid vehicle, as well as a special power package from Mercury Energy and a special home loan interest rate from The Co-Operative Bank (See attached Partner information for details).
For the renovation insulation specialists Greenstuf is insulating ceilings, flooring, and external walls, Resene is supplying paint, LG is providing new kitchen, laundry and entertainment products, and EQC is also on board. The Trade Me component makes this house renovation project even more unique with a special HRV Pure Invironment Project page and dedicated You Tube channel documenting the renovation’s progress. The video footage will range from demonstrations about the importance of installing water filtration and ventilation, through to DIY do-up tips.
Go to hrvhouse.co.nz, which directs you to the Trade Me page, to follow the renovation and see a 3D model of how the house will be transformed.
While the look of the house will be restored to its former glory, the key to the project is creating a pure invironment which will be achieved by state of the art healthy home solutions.
HRV Water, a whole home filtered water system, will be installed to provide filtration to all household taps ensuring it is free from contaminants.
The two bathrooms will be fitted with HRV Vortex wet area extractors, a HRV Next Generation system will power the ventilation of the home, and HRV heating and cooling solutions will help regulate the temperature inside the house during summer and winter.
Real estate agent Antonia Baker, who hears first-hand what buyers want from a house, says the HRV Pure Invironment Project is raising awareness about the importance of looking after your home and making it a liveable and safe place.
“It's high time a trusted brand like HRV started to beat the drum about making Kiwi homes healthier,” she says.
“From my experience, when people are buying a house they are becoming more and more conscious of whether it’s healthy and warm. So buyers do see value in healthy-home products which translates into a good sale price for sellers."
