February Sales of Commercial Vehicles Continue their Bull Run
“New vehicle registrations for February 2014 remain strong with another record month for sales of commercial vehicles.
It was the 5th year on year has been the highest since the MIA began collecting records” says David Crawford, Chief
Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association.
Total new vehicle registrations for the month of February were 9058, an increase of 1,111 vehicles for the same month
last year (14% increase). New commercial vehicle registrations were 2,567, a 19.2% increase over February 2013. It was
also the highest February sales since the MIA began collecting records in 1981. New passenger car sales also recorded a
strong month with 6,491 registrations, the best February since 1989.
Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of February with 15.0% market share (1,363 units) with Holden second
on 10.5% (949 units) and Ford third with 9.9% (894 units).
Holden was the passenger car market leader for the month of February with 12% share (782 units), with Toyota second on
11.7% (762 units) and Hyundai third with 9.5% (616 units).
Toyota Corolla remains the top selling passenger model with 5% market share (311 units), followed by Holden Captiva on
4% (279 units) and Suzuki Swift at 3% (226 units). The Holden Commodore and Hyundai Santa Fe were the next best-selling
models, also with 3% each of market share.
The Toyota Hilux was the top selling commercial model for February with 390 units sold (15% market share). The Ford
Ranger was the second best seller with 12% market share (311 units). This was followed by the Nissan Navara with 11%
(272 units). Year to date the Ford Ranger is the top selling commercial model with 13% market share (624 units) closely
followed by the Toyota Hilux, also with 13% market share (621 units).
The sale of sports utility vehicles represented 31% of all vehicles sales in January, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs
and small passenger cars at 19% each.
