Association congratulates new Police Commissioner

The Police Association today congratulated Mike Bush on his appointment as Commissioner of New Zealand Police.

“This will be a popular appointment amongst police. Mike Bush has policed his way to the top, most recently as Deputy Commissioner: Operations, and before that presiding as District Commander over the re-engineering of Counties-Manukau into Police’s model district,” said Police Association President Greg O’Connor.

“Of course, the top job brings with it a whole raft of new challenges. The Commissioner will be tasked with grappling with budget pressures as they continue to mount over coming years. He will also be the public face of Police not only when things go well, as crime stats currently are, but also when things go wrong – as, unfortunately, they inevitably must from time to time, especially as resources become stretched. Ultimately, it will be his performance in the face of these new challenges on which Mike Bush’s success in this job will be judged.

“We look forward to working with Commissioner Bush when he takes up his new role from 3 April,” Mr O’Connor said.
