Huawei and Telecom top Christmas smartphone list
February 21, 2014 - The Telecom Y300 smartphone, made by Huawei Technologies, was New Zealand’s most popular smartphone
in December 2013, according to market research firm GfK.
It was one of three Huawei devices to make the top 10, with the Huawei Ascend Y210 and Ascend Y320 taking the 6th and
7th spots respectively.
Huawei NZ CEO Jason Wu said smartphone sales had been consistently strong in New Zealand, but this was the first time a
single Huawei device had reached the number one spot.
“This is a great milestone to hit. While Huawei is still relatively new in this space, a combination of growing sales
and recent efforts to introduce the brand to New Zealanders has helped people to learn who we are and what we offer. The
Ascend smartphone range provides incredible levels of technology at a great price, and this was always a combination we
believed would resonate with shoppers – especially around the Christmas period.”
Huawei’s global smartphone sales have been on the rise, with 52 million shipped last year, making it the third largest
vendor in the world in both units shipped and market share.
Mr Wu says Huawei is deeply committed to the smartphone market and customers can expect devices to continue improving
and the company to keep innovating.
“The pace at which smartphones are developing is amazing and Huawei is in a great position to stay at the head of this
curve. Last year Huawei invested over US$5.4 billion in R We now have devices to cater for all smartphone users, from our flagship devices such as the Ascend P6 and Ascend P2,
which appeal to power users, to our entry and mid-level phones which provide an outstanding experience with fast
processors, large screens and long lasting batteries.”
