Live sport a GO with Vodafone technology lovers
Kiwis now have even more choice when it comes to watching television – and they are increasingly using mobile technology
to enjoy live sporting fixtures when they are away from home.
In January, Vodafone saw a 94% increase in users of the SKY GO app, with the highest streaming figures to date achieved
during the recent one day international series where our Black Caps took on India.
SKY Chief Executive John Fellet confirms that 70% of SKY subscribers have smartphones and tablets.
“We’ve seen more than 65,000 downloads of the SKY GO app since launch, about 60% of use on iPads and the rest on
iPhones. The feedback has been brilliant. We are now hard at work to enhance SKY GO with an app for Android to be
released soon.”
Matt Williams, Vodafone’s Consumer Director confirms more Kiwis are consuming content on the go and watching TV on
tablets for convenience.
“With Vodafone’s rollout of 4G now reaching 36 locations – including some of the most popular holiday destinations,
we’ve seen an increasing number of customers using tablets to access sports and movies from the bach or the camping
ground – or even in multiple rooms around the house.
“Our customers’ early adoption of the SKY GO app demonstrates the importance of a fast, reliable network. Over the
traditional Christmas holiday period* over 238TB of mobile data was used on the Vodafone network, that’s up 89% on last
year. Vodafone’s partnership with SKY ensures our customers not only get a great deal, but get access to the content
they want, when they want it. With ten live channels available to Vodafone SKY customers, they can watch their favourite
shows or keep tabs on the latest cricket score.”
SKY GO is one of a growing number of TV, video and music applications coming to smartphones and tablets and is changing
the way consumers are using their devices.
Back in October, Vodafone unveiled New Zealand’s first – and only – full TV service, including the more than 115 SKY
channels, using the new ultra fast broadband network, giving Kiwis a real incentive to move to fibre. SKY GO is yet
another example of Vodafone’s ongoing partnership with SKY.
