Super Trade Concludes 2014 Karaka Select Sale

A super day’s trade has rounded off New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2014 Select Sale today at Karaka, with the turnover, average, and clearance all ahead of last year’s figures.

The Sale that provided eight of the 13 Group 1 winners from NZB’s National Yearling Sales Series last year has seen a total of 416 horses sold over the past three days, with total takings of $19,224,000 (up 11%), at an average of $46,212 (up 7%), and a clearance rate of 75%, up from 71% at the sale’s conclusion last year.

This year’s Sale has seen 10 Lots sold for over $150,000 compared with only five last year, and 42 horses sold for over $100,000, 13 more than last year. This year's median price matched last year's at $35,000.

Today’s top price was recorded early in the day when Lot 930 was purchased by Queensland agent John Foote for $160,000. The colt offered by Brighthill Farm was the last Zabeel to go through the Karaka 2014 Sale, and potentially the last yearling by the great sire to be sold at Karaka.

Out of Al Maher mare Al Shamekha, the colt is from the international family of Group 1 winners Saddex (Sadler’s Wells) and Spinning World (Nureyev).

John Foote purchased the horse on behalf of his Queensland client Ian McCauley who was delighted with the purchase.

“Ian is a very good client and a great supporter of the Karaka Sales and he loves a good Zabeel,” commented Foote. “I’ve bought a number of horses over the years with Ian including another Zabeel called Turner Bayou that won the Queensland Cup last year.

“This colt is a good horse, he’s a strong Zabeel, well developed with a deep girth and Ian was determined to buy him.”

Four Lots earlier, Lot 926 was the second top price of the day, purchased by Willie Leung for Simon To for $150,000. The colt by second season sire Thewayyouare, out of the stakes placed mare Alleyrun and a half-brother to the highly regarded Allez Eagle, was sold by Goodwood Stud who also sold the top Lot of the Sale, yesterday’s Savabeel colt at Lot 773 sold for $200,000.

“The fact is from the beginning I have liked to buy first season sires as you can get a top lot from the first crop for reasonable value,” commented Leung. “Yesterday I bought the Rip Van Winkle for Mr To as I thought he was the best Rip Van Winkle in the Select Sale.”

“I bought the Thewayyouare colt for Mr To today because I’ve had luck buying his progeny before, plus he’s a half-brother to Allez Eagle.”

Bryce & Ginger Tankard’s Waikato Bloodstock have worked hard to add four purchases to their tally today to secure a total of 10 yearlings for the week for $775,000 at an average of $77,500. Based in Cambridge, the father and son duo have been mostly purchasing for their Hong Kong-based clients, with a top Select Sale price of $170,000 paid for Lot 838, a colt by freshman sire Per Incanto (by Street Cry).

“We are very happy with the Sale and thrilled to bits with the horses that we’ve got,” commented Bryce Tankard. “The quality of the Select Sale is right up there, with a very good, even line up of horses, the standard was very high.

“We’ve missed out on quite a few this week and come up a bit short so we’ll be back for the Festival Sale on Sunday for sure.

“I think there are some very good drafts from first season sires and it is great to see these young sires leaving such outstanding types, it’s very promising for the future.”

A total of 11 individual countries have been represented on the buyers list, compared with only five at the 2013 Select Sale. International buyers Aquanita, Michael Freedman, Willie Leung, Ger Beemsterboer, B2B Bloodstock and Colin Little are amongst those who have stayed on from the Premier Sale and made their presence felt over the three-day Select Sale.

But it has been the locals who have dominated, with 54% of the turnover provided by New Zealanders. Graeme & Debbie Rogerson have bought the most horses with 15 to place them in second spot overall, with the likes of local buyers Paul Moroney, Wexford Stables, Lisa Latta, Phill Cataldo, David Ellis, Bruce Perry and Garry Carvell all very active throughout the past three days.

With a wide and varied selection of 94 individual sires represented at the Select Sale, first season sires have continued to star filling four of the top 10 spots on the sires list by average, and providing three of the top six prices of the Select Sale.

Freshman sires Paco Boy, Shocking, Rip Van Winkle, Makfi, Per Incanto & Showcasing have all provided six-figure horses in the past three days, with the leading first season sire being Waikato Stud’s Paco Boy (Desert Style) with 8 yearlings sold at an average of $61,750, placing him third on the overall sires table.

Finishing a close second on the first season sires table was Melbourne Cup winner Shocking with a large representation of 24 yearlings sold at an average of $61,646.

Unheralded sire Raise the Flag (Sadler’s Wells), whose eldest crop are just two, ends the Sale as the leading sire by average (with three or more horses sold) thanks largely to $147,500 paid for his filly at Lot 1069.

Second on the overall sires list is champion sire O’Reilly with 8 sold for an average of $73,625. Waikato Stud’s linchpin sire also sold 34 yearlings at the Premier Sale for an average of $144,794, with $4,923,000 spent on his progeny this week.

The leading vendor by aggregate for the Select Sale is John & Colleen Thompson’s Rich Hill Stud which has sold 32 yearlings for $1,603,500 at an average of $50,109. With a large representation from their first season sire Shocking, the stud’s top price came at Lot 837 with $160,000 for the colt by their young sire.

The leading vendor by average (with three or more sold) is South Island vendor White Robe Lodge selling three yearlings for a total of $260,000 at an average of $86,667.

Across the past five days of selling – the Premier and Select Sales combined – Waikato Stud has sold 65 yearlings for a total of $8,873,000 at an average of $136,508, remaining as the leading vendor across all Sales.

With the Premier and Select Sales completed, there is just one chance left to secure yearlings from Karaka 2014, with the one-day Festival Sale on Sunday (February 2) with 290 Lots set to go under the hammer from the earlier time of 10am.
