Tissue products investment vote of confidence for Kiwi-made
SCA Hygiene Australasia’s $60 million expansion of its toilet and towel tissue manufacturing site in Kawerau is a
welcome vote of confidence in the local and national economy, says the Food & Grocery Council.
Chief Executive Katherine Rich says SCA Hygiene Australasia is to be congratulated on its move.
“This is a significant investment in the region and the country for the tissue and paper consumer goods company after a
time when many companies have shifted their manufacturing overseas.
“This keeps more than 200 jobs for Kiwis in an area that needs them, and adds value to wood products here in New Zealand
before local sale or export. Increasing output of tissue products from the site equivalent to 22 12-metre containers a
week is not to be sneezed at.
“New Zealand needs more of these sorts of investments where we are adding value to our commodity products onshore.
“Consumers will welcome the fact that popular products such as Purex and Handee tissues and Tork professional hygiene
brands will continue to be made here in New Zealand to the highest quality.
“The company also demonstrates a commitment to New Zealand’s environment. SCA Hygiene Australasia is renowned for its
emphasis on sustainability, for which it has won local and national awards. It uses renewable forestry stocks and raw
materials that can be recycled, and the Kawerau plant uses geothermal steam in the manufacturing process, so it’s a
win-win.”
