Staying Alive: Volunteer and Emergency Services Open Day
8 February, Queens Wharf 10am to 4pm
Auckland’s emergency services are joining forces on Queens Wharf (Saturday 8 February) to provide the public with a rare
behind-the-scenes glimpse into their daily work.
The New Zealand Fire Service, it’s Urban Search and Rescue team, Police, St John Ambulance, Coastguard, Defence Force,
SPCA, and other community groups are taking part. They will be demonstrating the importance of volunteers to the safety
of communities and show how they deal with some of the incidents they attend.
More than one million New Zealanders are involved in volunteer work. They make vital contributions to education, social
services, health, recreation and the arts. This annual event is intended to foster closer engagement between communities
and some of these volunteer organisations.
Staying Alive Organiser, Terry Hewitt says the free Volunteer and Emergency Services Open Day is a great opportunity to
show Auckland’s emergency capability and the vital part that emergency and non-emergency volunteers play in their
communities. “We are building on our experience at last year’s successful event in Albany and are thrilled the volunteer
and emergency services groups are returning with an even bigger showcase.”
