Skyline Rotorua welcomes new additions
Skyline Rotorua has nine new additions - of the woolly variety - on their Mt Ngongotaha site, with visitors having the opportunity to “meet” the seven pet lambs and two teenage alpaca that now live amongst the various other activities on offer at Skyline.
Skyline general manager, Bruce Thomasen, says the animals are visible from the Gondola cabins.
“Skyline has over ninety acres of land and one of the key reasons for having the livestock in the paddock, is to keep the grass down, prior to their arrival the paddocks had to be mowed constantly. We now have four have legged mowers!
“The alpaca, Andre and Olivier, have only recently joined our family and are settling in well with the lambs in paddocks located below the top terminal and restaurant complex. Visitors can access the animal areas on some of our nature walks and are welcome to take photographs of their encounter.”
Mr Thomasen says the animals have added another family fun experience that both domestic and international visitors are enjoying.
“While we are well known for our views,
great food, and of course the Luge, the lambs and alpaca
offer visitors an opportunity to view and interact with some
farm as well. Whilst some kiwis take this for granted, a
number of visitors just don’t normally get this chance.
“We place a high importance on constantly innovating
and evolving so that our offering remains fresh and
interesting for visitors. This is another example of
that.”
The brown alpaca, Andre, was born in March last year and is the smaller of the two. Olivier, the caramel alpaca, was named after a famous French race car driver due to his quick birth.
“Alpaca have proven to be great, easy care animals and are already providing lots of fun and enjoyment for both our staff and visitors,” says Mr Thomasen.
Alpaca are a domesticated species of Camelid and originate from the Altiplano area of South America. They are closely related to the other domesticated Camelid, Llama.
