Six hours of free Fulton Hogan labour benefits community
The community has benefited from a Christmas present to Horowhenua District Council from construction and roading
contactors Fulton Hogan.
On its last operational day just before Christmas the company provided six hours of free labour, along with vehicles and
machinery, to be used for community projects specified by the Council.
Three Fulton Hogan staff members worked to clear green waste from the corner of Donnelly Park in Levin, while seven
others picked up litter and other rubbish along Waitarere Beach.
Contract manager Tony Hooper says the company acknowledges that most of its work in Horowhenua is provided by the
Council on behalf of the community.
So rather than traditional business-to-business Christmas gifts, Mr Hooper says the company decided to give something
with wider benefit.
"I was part of the crew on rubbish duty at Waitarere Beach. We managed to fill two truck-loads of rubbish, including old
car seats and even some burnt-out couches - not what you want to see discarded at the beach," he said.
Horowhenua District Council parks and leisure manager Duncan de Burgh says Fulton Hogan's initiative was a generous
gesture to both the Council and the community.
“We always strive to save money where we can, so to receive those six hours of free labour and machinery and use them
towards improving the aesthetics of part of Donnelly Park and Waitarere Beach has been fantastic," he said.
"Council has a positive and long-standing relationship with Fulton Hogan and the company’s kind gesture also shows its
commitment to our community.”
